Start with SpanWise

SpanWise gives every screen ratio its own collection of useful window positions. Matching 16:9 displays share one menu, while a MacBook and a 49-inch monitor can use completely different layouts.

Layouts are created once, then linked to screen ratios such as 16:9, 3:2 or 32:9.
  1. Open SpanWise and allow Accessibility. This is the only macOS privacy permission it needs.
  2. Choose whether SpanWise should start when you log in, so the minimize-button palette is always ready.
  3. Keep iCloud sync on if you use more than one Mac. Your layouts and screen-ratio menus then follow your Apple Account.
  4. Pick the suggested grid for the current display.
  5. Pause over a window’s yellow minimize button, choose a grid, point at a position and click.

The screen overlay follows your pointer and shows the destination before the window changes size.

Ordinary window dragging never triggers SpanWise. A window moves only after you explicitly choose a position from the minimize-button palette, use Deal, or invoke a shortcut.

  • Place one window: open the minimize-button palette, choose a division and click a position.
  • Deal all visible windows: press ⌃⌥⌘D to fill the active grid in most-recently-used order. Press it again within two seconds to rotate the windows.

The default layout is what Deal and keyboard movement use first for that screen ratio. Every other linked layout stays available at the minimize button.

SpanWise works with windows on the currently visible Space. macOS does not provide a public API for moving windows on other Spaces.
